Parents, caregivers, and providers play an important role in guiding how teens use social media. But it can be hard to know where to start! How can we engage teens in conversations? What are some roadblocks to avoid? This live virtual event will share information about the possible impacts of social media on youth mental health and wellbeing and how this led to the creation of the American Academy of Pediatrics Family Media Plan. It will also explain how providers can use principles of Motivational Interviewing (MI) to foster conversations as families establish expectations around social media use. Presenters will talk through using the Family Media Plan from an MI lens and offer culturally responsive guidance for families with diverse identities.
