What is the Leaders In Prevention Program?

It is a 3-day overnight leadership and prevention training program for teams of middle school students, grades 6-8. Each Team participates in activities to strengthen group skills, explore school climate & community service topics, and gain substance abuse prevention knowledge and tools. It is also an incredible opportunity to meet youth from across the state of New Hampshire and the greater New England area.

What will participants gain from the Leaders In Prevention (LIP) Program?

  • Solid youth leadership skills from highly-qualified Adult Staff
  • Positive role-modeling and cross-age teaching from high school Youth Staff
  • Critical life skills (i.e. substance abuse refusal skills, conflict resolution, bullying/harassment prevention)
  • Accurate, up-to-date information on substance abuse/addiction
  • Ideas, skills, and motivation to make a positive difference in their home and school communities
  • Increased self-confidence in meeting others and working together as an integral part of a Team

What happens at the LIP Program?

  • A healthy community is created where youth and adults cooperate to provide a safe, accepting environment for all.
  • Fun activities and events are held to encourage positive interaction and healthy risk-taking.
  • The opportunity for participants to meet and make friends with youth from around the state.
    • Community Sessions bring all attending Teams together, along with Youth and Adult Staff; these Sessions address Leadership, Community Service, and Youth Empowerment.
    • Track Learning Sessions provide information and activities in dealing with Substance Abuse/Addiction, Diversity and Acceptance, Problem-Solving/Adventure, and Bullying Prevention; two-three Teams attend each Track Session at a time, for a full rotation of all four Track Sessions.
    • Discovery Sessions offer participants skills-based training in elective prevention ideas and activities of their choice, such as listening/communication skills, cross-age teaching, utilizing the arts in prevention, making effective presentations, and specific project ideas.

How can Middle School Students be chosen for the LIP Program?

  • Schools or community organizations may send students:
    • From an existing group such as Student Council, Peer Mediation, or an After-School Group;
      • Who are not currently affiliated with any existing group but who wish to be empowered as leaders
      • Who are interested in community service activities

Who are the Leaders in Prevention Staff?

  • High school students who have attended a previous LIP Program and/or other TI
    leadership development workshops as participants.
  • High school and college-aged students trained in advanced leadership and Team
    facilitation skills.
  • Adult professionals who work with youth in the fields of education, prevention, and

Who runs the Leaders in Prevention (LIP) Program?

New Hampshire Teen Institute is the only statewide organization to offer leadership and prevention programming for middle and high school students. Teen Institute has trained and empowered teens to make a positive difference in their schools and communities since 1983. Our unique training formats reinforce healthy lifestyles and encourage teens to create positive environments for themselves and others.

What does LIP cost and who can I contact for more information?

Leaders In Prevention is $2400 for a 10-person team which includes all program supplies, housing, and food for the weekend. Scholarship opportunities are available!
