Teaching Healthy Ways to Cope with Big Feelings

Jul 11, 2025

In this episode, we sit down with licensed mental health counselor, Janine Halloran, to talk about how to help young people manage their big emotions in healthy, effective ways. Janine shares what’s really going on beneath those intense feelings and offers practical, hands-on coping strategies that adults can teach and use in the moment. Whether you’re a parent, educator, or mentor, you’ll leave with simple, proven tools to support the emotional well-being of the young people in your life.

In today’s episode, we focus on how to help young people manage their big emotions in healthy ways and we’re joined by Janine Halloran, a licensed mental health counselor with over two decades of experience working with youth. Janine explains that emotional outbursts are a normal part of brain development, particularly during teenage years, which are marked by rapid, inconsistent growth in emotional and cognitive abilities. She emphasizes the importance of adults modeling emotional regulation, describing caregivers as “thermostats” who set the emotional tone in any environment. The conversation also explores the impact of early substance use on brain development, noting that substances interfere with emotional regulation and can delay problem-solving growth. However, thanks to neuroplasticity, the brain can relearn healthier strategies with practice.

Janine advocates for teaching coping skills from a young age, so that children are equipped with safe, constructive ways to handle big emotions—ultimately reducing their reliance on unhealthy habits like substance use. These coping tools can be integrated into practice within schools and at home.

Adults often unintentionally model poor emotional regulation, which can influence how kids learn to handle their own emotions. She encourages parents to be honest with their own emotional journeys and to model coping strategies aloud, reinforcing the idea that it’s okay not to have all the answers. In closing, Janine stresses that connection is the foundation for emotional growth, and that strong relationships are essential for helping young people navigate life’s emotional challenges.
