National Drug and Alcohol Facts Week® Social Media Toolkit (March 17-23, 2025)

The Campaign

National Drug and Alcohol Facts Week® (NDAFW) is an annual health observance that fosters dialogue on the science of substance use and substance use disorder among youth. Hosted by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), NDAFW brings together scientists, students, educators, healthcare professionals, and community partners to advance scientific understanding and address youth substance use.

The Toolkit

This social media toolkit includes sample messages and images designed to share facts about substance use, including alcohol, prescription drugs, vaping, and cannabis. The Partnership invites substance use prevention partners throughout New Hampshire to share these materials, helping to educate our community and respond to youth substance use. Messages can be modified to suit your organization’s needs.

What seems like harmless fun to youth can have serious consequences, both now and later in life. Substance use can cloud judgment, impact mental health, and make it harder to succeed in school and relationships. Over time, it can rewire the brain, increasing the risk of addiction. This National Drug and Alcohol Facts Week®, let the youth in your life know that the choices they make today can shape their opportunities, well-being, and success down the road. Youth need love, support, and accurate information from trusted adults in their lives. An effective conversation with youth should focus on listening and sharing facts, not judgment. National Drug and Alcohol Facts Week® encourages adults to talk with the youth in their lives about the risks associated with marijuana/cannabis, prescription medications, stimulants, alcohol, and other drug use, and the difference between adult use and youth use. Your opinion and involvement in the lives of the youth you care for makes a difference! Learn more: https://bit.ly/3WIBE16 #NDAFW #ThePartnershipNH

NATIONAL DRUG AND ALCOHOL FACTS WEEK® | Teens may see misinformation about cannabis and its health effects, claiming it’s harmless for them. Get the facts from reliable sources to keep them safe. | The Partnership

THC levels in cannabis have increased—from just 3% to as high as 90%, with an average around 15%. High-potency products come with serious risks, including mental health effects and addiction. In NH, recreational use of cannabis is illegal. This National Drug and Alcohol Facts Week®, take time to learn the facts and talk with the youth in your life about the misleading messages around cannabis. NATIONAL DRUG AND ALCOHOL FACTS WEEK® | Just one vape cartridge contains as much nicotine as a whole pack of cigarettes. | The Partnership

Vaping isn’t harmless. Early nicotine use can harm brain development, affect how nerve cells work, and increase the risk of addiction. Young people who vape are 4x more likely to start smoking cigarettes compared to those who don’t (UCSF, 2024). Don’t let vaping be a gateway. Encourage the teens in your life to find healthy ways to cope with stress, including exercising, taking up a new hobby, and engaging with friends and family. https://bit.ly/4jJV27C #NDAFW

NATIONAL DRUG AND ALCOHOL FACTS WEEK® | Just because a product is labeled as “tobacco-free”, doesn’t mean it’s safe. Many products still contain nicotine, which is harmful for youths developing brain. | The Partnership

Nicotine pouches have exploded in popularity—and just like e-cigarettes, they’re being marketed to young people. These pouches pack high doses of nicotine, making addiction easier and quitting harder. Plus, many young users don’t stop there—a study found that those who use nicotine pouches often use other tobacco products too. Don’t let the youth in your life get hooked. Learn the risks so you can help them stay in control. https://bit.ly/4jJV27C #NDAFW #ThePartnershipNH #NicotineFacts

NATIONAL DRUG AND ALCOHOL FACTS WEEK® | Teens may misuse prescription medication to cope with stress or boost school performance. Two-thirds get them from friends or family (SAMHSA, 2014). | The Partnership

Experimenting with drugs is riskier than ever because there’s no certainty of what’s really in them. According to the DEA, 6 out of 10 fake prescription pills contain a potentially lethal dose of fentanyl. Talk to the teens in your life about the dangers of taking prescription medications that don’t belong to them—and always store your medications up high or locked away. NATIONAL DRUG AND ALCOHOL FACTS WEEK® | When teens avoid alcohol and other drug use, their mental health can thrive! | The Partnership
Being a teenager comes with many challenges, especially as the brain undergoes major changes. Today’s youth are facing a growing mental health crisis recognized by the U.S. Surgeon General. Substance use can make things even harder by worsening depression, anxiety, and stress. Encourage the youth in your life to prioritize their mental well-being and seek support when needed ❤️ #NDAFW #ThePartnershipNH #MentalHealth
