Intentional Involvement

The Power of Being Present

Your everyday presence and intentional involvement in your child’s life is one of the most effective ways to protect them from substance use. Taking an active, positive interest in their world, and showing them that their emotions matter, strengthens your connection. Staying meaningfully connected with your child doesn’t require huge gestures.

From family dinners to supporting their hobbies, here are practical ideas to deepen your connection with your child:

  • Share a meal: Aim to eat together at least four times a week. It creates a reliable, low-pressure space to check in.
  • Know the circle: Get to know your child’s friends and their parents. Before your child goes to a friend’s house, confirm an adult will be home.
  • Validate their emotions: When your child seems angry or stressed, start a conversation with an observation like “you seem really stressed today.” Being empathetic, and not minimizing their problems, shows them that their feelings are completely safe with you.
  • Follow their lead: Even if their interest doesn’t line up with yours (like video games or a specific app), ask them to teach you about it. Look for ways to bridge that interest into skill-building, like a game design or coding class.
  • Support school success: Make sure your child attends school and has a quiet place to do their homework. Encourage them to reach out to their teachers if they need extra help or advice.
