PRESENTATION: This training by Growth Partners has been customized for the needs of New Hampshire. This training will cover the Prevention Planning and Evaluation Map and outline the steps of the prevention planning and evaluation process, which were recently used to develop New Hampshire’s State Strategic Plan for Prevention. Instruction will include a mix of dialectic, interactive, and experimental learning with participants using state, regional, and/or community data to work through and apply each step in the process. As a result of attending this training, participants will increase their ability to carry out prevention planning and evaluation by increasing skills needed to:

  • Collect, organize, and analyze/interpret data and other information
  • Assess and build community resources, readiness, and capacity
  • Identify and engage key stakeholders and community members
  • Conduct culturally responsive prevention strategic planning
  • Develop and implement effective, outcome-focused prevention programming and activities consistent with strategic prevention planning models
  • Select culturally relevant evaluation instruments/models
  • Conduct culturally responsive prevention evaluation

ABOUT THE PRESENTERS:  Laurie Barger Sutter has three decades of experience developing sustainable public and behavioral health systems that can solve complex social and public health issues and enhance the wellbeing of people. She’s conducted hundreds of webinars, workshops and training events for state and federal agencies including the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the U.S Department of Education, and the American Public Health Association. Her strategic planning and health system assessment, planning, and evaluation tools and processes have been used to strengthen organizational and health outcomes in all 50 states and 10 federal jurisdictions. As the CEO of Growth Partners, Laurie oversees TA to multiple states and communities in addition to administering the New Hampshire Technical Assistance Center for the Bureau of Drug and Alcohol Services. Prior to founding Growth Partners, Laurie directed the State TA Contract for SAMHSA’s Center for Substance Abuse Prevention, where she oversaw prevention system assessments and TA for all 50 states and 10 federal jurisdictions. Laurie also has experience in state government, having served as a state Prevention Director and National Prevention Network (NPN) representative. She has extensive experience in working with community, state, tribal, territorial, and federal agencies and organizations and was named an Advocate of the Year by the Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America (CADCA) for her work in helping secure passage of the federal Sober Truth on Underage Drinking (STOP) Act.

Mary Ellen has over twenty-five years of prevention experience at the community, county, state, and national levels. She’s conducted hundreds of webinars, workshops and training events on topics related to substance misuse prevention, using data for planning and evaluation, evidence-based prevention, mobilizing partners, and SAMHSA’s Strategic Prevention Framework. As the Director of training and Technical Assistance (TA) for Growth Partners, Mary works with states and communities across the country and manages the delivery of TA services through New Hampshire’s Technical Assistance Center for those who provide services across the alcohol and other drug continuum of care. Prior to Growth Partners, Mary Ellen worked on SAMHSA’s State TA Project, where she conducted state prevention system assessments, developed T/TA plans for state system improvement, and coordinated TA service delivery for 21 states ranging from the East coast to the upper Midwest. During her 9 years in state government, Mary Ellen worked with system partners to administer federal Substance Abuse Prevention and Treatment Block Grant funds and other discretionary grant programs such as the Enforcing Underage Drinking Laws program. Mary Ellen also served as Training Manager at Prevention First, where she designed and administered training and TA for prevention practitioners, grantees, and coalitions across the State of Illinois.
