Motivational Interviewing Basics

January 29 @ 8:30 am - 4:00 pm

New Hampshire Alcohol & Drug Abuse Counselors Association logo

Motivational Interviewing is a client-centered, evidence-based, directive method for enhancing intrinsic motivation to change by exploring and resolving ambivalence. After orientation to the underlying spirit, structure, and principles of Motivational Interviewing, practical exercises will help participants strengthen empathy skills, recognize and elicit patient change talk, and roll with resistance. This class will provide peer-recovery specialists and past, current or future practitioners of MI with an opportunity to explore creative ways of integrating these approaches.

This MI class was designed with peer assisted recovery in mind, however, the content for this is no different than the MI Basics that would be taught to clinical practitioners in behavioral health, substance use disorder or community health settings.

As a result of this training, participants will be able to:

  • Define Motivational Interviewing;
  • Identify the four elements of the Spirit of Motivational Interviewing;
  • Describe OARS;
  • List the 4 processes of Motivational Interviewing;
  • Define change talk;
  • Describe ways to assist in resolving our own desires, bias and tendencies to enhance our skills and ability to support those we work with;
  • Describe how to evoke change talk, soften sustain talk, and help resolve ambivalence in individuals they serve; and
  • Identify participant dreams, values, and strengths to support their ability and willingness to change.
