What is DXM?
Dextromethorphan (DXM) is a cough-suppressant used in over-the counter cold and cough medications. When abused in high doses, it can cause hallucinations and serious, permanent problems.

- Medicines with DXM often contain acetaminophen, a pain reliever that can cause serious liver damage when taken in high doses.
- Although it is more regulated than it has been in the past, drugs containing DXM are still relatively easy to obtain.
Dangerous because:
- Misuse can cause rapid heart beat, and can lead to a heart attack.
- Misuse can cause muscle spasms and numbness of toes and fingers.
- Misuse can cause accidental overdose and death.
Signs of use:
- Cough medicine disappears from medicine cabinet
- Nausea and vomiting
- Abdominal pain
- Blurred vision
- Loss of motor control
- A sense of being disconnected from reality
- Hallucinations
